LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Skating Club of New York skaters swept Friday’s, Jan. 31, Empire State Winter Games women’s novice figure skating podium. Maggie Zhang, Naiya Mentor and Annabelle McKenzie each skated the competition’s most technical programs and were rewarded for it, winning the competition’s gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Judges awarded Zhang 60.41 points following her routine that featured a perfectly executed double lutz, double toeloop jump combination, as well as a nearly flawless flying sit spin, single axel and double loop jump.
Mentor’s double flip, double toeloop, double loop was the competition’s most difficult combination and performed it almost perfectly, receiving just a .06 deduction en route to the silver medal and 60.21 points. She also received high marks for her double lutz and single toeloop combination and her double flip jump.
McKenzie’s bronze medal free skate routine earned 58.58 points from the panel of five judges. Skating the competition’s third most technical program, she impressed the them with her jumping skills, earning high marks for her double salchow, double lutz, double loop combination, double flip, double toeloop combination and double flip.
Shea Burns, who was representing the Skating Club of Western New York, won the juvenile girl’s competition. She performed the competition’s most difficult program, highlighted by a perfect scored double salchow, double loop jump combination, on her way to 37.59 points from the six watchful judges.
Skate Canada’s Danica Dutkewich, emerged as the event’s silver medalist, while Caroline Canary, from Hudson-Mohawk Figure Skating Club, earned the bronze medal. Dutkewich’s single axel, single toeloop combo earned high marks as did her sit spin and the judges awarded her 25.57 points. Canary received 22.51 points and high marks from the panel of judges for her sit spin and her footwork and sit spin combination.
