LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Therese Sowa, one of five short-track speedskating Sowas competing in the 43rd Empire State Winter Games, won gold in Division 3 Scholastic B classification at the Olympic Center Sunday.

Sowa, 11, of Medford, Mass., tied with Cassie Lei, 11 of Sharon, Mass. to share gold. Each had two wins and two runner-up results – to each other. Phoenix Abernathy, 13, of Glastonbury, Conn. won bronze, finishing with three thirds and a fifth in the 7-racer field.

Frederick Sowa, 18, also of Medford, used three third-place and one second-place finish to take overall bronze in the Division 2 Scholastic A Men’s category behind gold medalist Liam Kitchel, 15, of White River Junction (three firsts and one second) and silver medalist Rory O’Brien, 18, of Lakewood, Ohio (a first, two seconds and a third).

The ESWG, sponsored by Community Bank, N.A., is the largest multi-winter amateur sports event in the United States. From Friday Feb. 3-Sunday, Feb. 5, close to 2,200 athletes are scheduled to compete in 23 winter sports in Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and Paul Smiths.
