LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Michael Khavin of the Hudson Valley Figure Skating Club took gold in the intermediate men’s figure skating competition in the first full day of the 43rd Empire State Winter Games Friday.

Khavin performed three combination jumps, including a double salchow-single loop-double loop to score 47.87 points in the free skate, outdistancing silver medalist Ian Montour of the Jamestown Skating Club, who posted a score of 42.11. Skating Club of Central New York’s Eli Conner won bronze with a score of 40.01. They were the only three skaters in the division.

Mete Gokdemir of the Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club posted a score of 25.25 points in his free skate as the lone competitor in the Juvenile Boys division, winning gold with a program that included five doubles, including a combination double flip-double toeloop late in the program.

The ESWG, sponsored by Community Bank, N.A., is the largest multi-winter amateur sports event in the United States. From Friday Feb. 3-Sunday, Feb. 5, close to 2,200 athletes are competing in 23 winter sports in Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and Paul Smiths.
