DOMBARD AND MCCARTY SLIDE TO EMPIRE STATE WINTER GAMES YOUTH A LUGE CROWNS

Lake Placid’s Max Zayonc Wins Empire State Winter Games Youth B Men’s Silver Medal

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Luge is the “Fastest Sport on Ice” and Riley Dombard, of Downer Groves, Ill., and Emryn McCarty, of Swampscott, Mass., showed that they were the fastest sliders during Saturday’s, Feb. 3, Empire State Winter Games’ Youth A luge race, held at Mt. Van Hoevenberg’s Sports Complex Track, in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Dombard, 15, finished his two runs from start #4, the half-way point of the one-mile long icy chute, in a time of one minute, 33.495 seconds. He was just a slim eight-hundreds of a second ahead of the race’s silver medalist, Michael Montegari, 14, from Remsen, N.Y. who finished in a two-run time of 1:33.575.

Sinatra Robles, of Castleton, Vt., claimed the bronze medal for the race that featured 15–18-year-old athletes. His combined time stopped the clock in 1:34.089.

McCarty, 14, of Swampscott, Mass., slid past the six-sled field with a pair of first place runs and recorded a total time of 1:33.066, en route to the women’s Youth A gold medal. She was followed by 15-year-old Abby Lorz, from Ottawa, Ontario, who won silver in 1:39.469, and Zolo Ananopoulos, 15, from Westmont, Ill., who claimed the bronze medal. Her two runs totaled 1:40.721.

Landon Kozik, 13, of Norfolk, Mass., won the men’s Youth B event, open to athletes ages 10-14. From start #4, he finished in a time of 1:39.510. Lake Placid’s Max Zayonc, 11, grabbed the silver medal, 1:39.975, while Warren Briggs, 13, of Madrid, N.Y. came away with the bronze medal. Following the sixth fastest run of the race’s first heat, he was the second heat’s third fastest slider and finished with a two-heat total of 1:40.077.

The Youth B women’s title went to Delilah Salgado. The 11-year-old from Ashland, Mass. beat the five-sled field with a total time of 1:37.643. Emmelina Campos, 12, from Clarendon Hills, Ill. finished second, in 1:40.413, and Madison Sorrell emerged as the bronze medalist. The 12-year-old from Piqua, Ohio was clocked in 1:44.089.

In the Adult Masters race, Lake Placid’s Matt Gannon won gold, Anthony Shimkonis, of Wilmington, N.C. claimed silver and Kara Potter, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., raced to the bronze medal.
